Ugly Duckling

The Ugly Duckling fly pattern refers to a that is not aesthetically pleasing but is highly effective in catching fish. Some anglers believe that the appearance of the fly is not as important as its movement and presentation in the water. As a result, they may use flies that are not traditionally considered attractive but still work well for catching fish. And the Ugly Duckling is one such fly!

The fly is credited Gary Anderson, a lake- fishing expert from Wenatchee, WA who invented the fly.

The fly is designed to imitate a stillborn or emerging midge in lakes and ponds. It is a great fly that can save the day when trout get selective on midge emergers. In the spring and fall, trout on lakes and ponds feed heavily on midges (commonly referred to as chironomids).

Many anglers fish chironomids successfully to catch trout. However, there are times when the fish start feeding on midges in the upper water column, especially the surface film. Many anglers try to catch these fish with the classic dry fly patterns such as the Griffith’s Gnat and
usually end up frustrated because of the many misses they get.

When fish are feeding on midge emergers or stillborn midges, this is the perfect time to use the Ugly Duckling (Duck).
