Stillborn Elk Caddis

The Stillborn Elk Caddis fly pattern imitates a caddisfly that has died before it hatches, and is therefore unable to break through its shuck and emerge as an adult. This makes it an easy target for hungry trout that are looking for an easy meal.

The fly is tied on a standard dry fly hook with a dubbed body made from elk hair or synthetic dubbing material, and features a wing and hackle made from elk hair. The wing is tied in a spent position, with the tips of the hair facing backward to imitate the shuck of the caddisfly. The hackle is tied in a parachute style to help the fly float on the water’s surface.

The Stillborn Elk Caddis is typically fished on the surface of the water, either on its own or as part of a dry-dropper rig. It is particularly effective in slower moving water and on overcast days when trout are more likely to be feeding near the surface.

Overall, the Stillborn Elk Caddis is a versatile fly pattern that every fly fisherman should have in their fly box. It is relatively easy to tie and is a great choice for imitating caddisflies during the hatch season or when trout are feeding on spent flies.
