It belongs to the “Rat” series of flies, which are known for their elegant design and effectiveness in salmon fishing. The Rusty Rat is particularly popular for its flashy yet understated appearance, and it is effective in both clear and murky waters.

• Tail: Golden pheasant crest or Peacock Herl
• Body: Orange floss or silk in the rear section and peacock herl in the front section
• Ribbing: Fine silver tinsel, wrapped over both the floss and peacock herl

• Hackle: Soft brown or ginger hackle for the collar
• Head: Black thread, typically finished with a small lacquered head

This fly imitates the movements of small fish or insects and is known for its versatility, often being fished with both floating and sinking lines depending on water conditions.
